Over the last few years, Portugal has been attracting a growing number of international students, which have increased at an average annual growth rate of 12% between 2013 and 2016.

The upsurge in the number of international students has given rise to an increase in student accommodation supply. However, at the present time there is a lack of premium level and modern student accommodation to meet international student demand with current supply not entirely suited to the existing demand.

The first specialist purpose-built student residence, owned and operated by overseas entities, opened in Lisbon early in 2018 and we expect to see a further increase in this type of high quality scheme and more overseas capital inflows in Portugal in the future.
